From the people, to the houses, to the nature around them.Īside from Eve’s grief and her desire to solve her daughter’s murder, another major point of the novel is Eve’s relationship with her addict mother. Engel also does an excellent job of setting the mood – I really felt she captured the feeling of a poor rural town, and all that comes along with it. There are some very poignant moments in the first half of the book, where Eve is dealing with her grief, and learning to lean on the people around her. The Familiar Dark does deliver with excellent writing – as I mentioned, some of the passages truly had me not just tearing up but actually crying. I had high hopes that The Familiar Dark would leave me feeling the same way.

I thought the writing was stellar, and I loved the gritty, no-holds-barred story with a satisfying ending.

I was a big fan of Engel’s other mystery-thriller, The Roanoke Girls.
